Support Community Gardens

Local community gardens are an incredible resource deserving our support! Today we learned about a new community garden located close to Scenic Elementary School in the Redlands section of Grand Junction, Colorado. The group that began the garden this year moved from a previous church location that we supported over the past several years. The mission of Two Fishes Farm is to serve the community as a: “non-profit, charitable organization …to grow and provide food for individuals, educate persons on the best practices of growing food while conserving natural resources, and engage the community through outreach and volunteerism, while sharing our faith in God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Bible.

We have formed by recognizing that there is a need in our community for affordable and attainable fresh fruit and vegetables. This need was being met by Canyon View Vineyard Church Gardens, which grew and donated tens of thousands of pounds of produce over an eight year period. They finished their last growing season this past fall, after the decision was made by Canyon View Vineyard Church to sell the property that the garden is on.”

The executive director, Mrs. Ann Trout said about half of the produce is for family use and half goes to a food bank to provide fresh food to the poor! The garden is growing a variety of fruits and vegetables including apricots, beans, cabbage, herbs, tomatoes, onions, and zucchini. She mentioned the native American tradition of growing winter squash, maize (corn), and climbing beans known as the three sisters.

Help is needed now for weeding, delivering manure, providing a tractor, and picking apricots. For more information or to offer help please contact Ann at atrout@twofishesfarm.org.
